Look Good Feel Better

Cancer treatment can be a very difficult journey for many of the thousands diagnosed with cancer each year in Australia. For that reason I would like to share a very special and unique program with you, Look Good... Feel Better.
Look Good Feel Better is a free national program dedicated to teaching cancer patients techniques to restore their appearance and gain more self confidence during their treatments. The workshops, whether rural or city based, are suitably located in cancer centers and hospitals across Australia.

The program, developed by the Australian cosmetic industry in May of 1990 has reached over 90,000 cancer patients.  This year alone the cosmetic industry donated over 128,000 units of cosmetic products-valued at around $3.2 million-to Look Good…Feel Better.

All volunteers for Look Good…Feel Better are all qualified beauty therapists, makeup artists, or hair dressers.  Each volunteer is specially trained and certified for the Look Good Feel Better program prior to their participation in the workshops. Today there are currently over 1,700 volunteers assisting the program and there are currently over 170 workshop locations available in every State and Territory across Australia.

6 months ago I proudly became one of the Look Good Feel Better “Angels” and can say I have never done anything that has been more fulfilling.

Being someone who has personally experienced a family member with cancer I expected the atmosphere to be somewhat solemn and I worried that my emotions would get the most of me during the workshop. I must admit it was completely the opposite.  The room was overflowing with joy and laughter and the women who came into the workshop timid and shy left with confidence and a positive new look on life.
Look Good…Feel Better receives a considerable amount of support from the cosmetic industry through the donation of products, their participation during Dream Week and the Dream Ball. This level of commitment contributes greatly towards providing the makeup and materials required for the programs ongoing success.

This year Dream Week ran from the 12th to the 18th of September in David Jones and Myers stores.  Myself and the other "Angles" set off selling pins to many supportive shoppers in the stores raising much needed funds.

During the duration of Dream Week, both retailers graciously donated $1 from each sale of a product across the entire week - all lipstick and lip gloss sales (David Jones) and all mascara sales (Myer).
Friday evening it was time to roll out the red carpet for annual Dream Ball.  Hosted by Todd Mckenney and long time Look Good Feel Better ambassador Kerri Anne Kennerley, the year’s biggest event for the cosmetic industry catered to over 700 guests, and included over 30 volunteers. We were all treated to a beautiful meal and had a private guest appearance from award winning singer Guy Sebastian.   It was a fantastic evening. This year the Dream Ball raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for The Look Good Feel Better program.
